Whatsit Manufacturing Co.

I've been working on a side project for a while now, and it's finally at the point where I can talk about it: Whatsit Manufacturing Co. is my small bespoke manufacturing business, specializing in custom-designed handmade products and made-to-order items.

The tagline is "fine dohickies and thingamabobs" which captures the spirit of the thing pretty well. Someone comes to me with an idea - a specialized tool, a unique gift, a one-of-a-kind solution to a problem - and I design and build it from scratch. I also have a small catalog of stock products that can be customized.

What I make

On the stock side, I've been doing a lot of sailing-related items:

  • Laser/ILCA sailboat awards - model sailboats with actual dacron sails on hardwood bases

Laser sailboat award

  • Brass awards - CNC engraved brass coins with optional colored epoxy inlays

Brass award

  • RC/Protest tokens - educational tools for sailing race committees

RC and protest tokens

The custom work is where it gets interesting though. CNC engraving, woodworking with hardwoods, metal work, epoxy inlays - basically if you can describe it, I'll figure out how to build it.

Why

I've always liked making things. There's something satisfying about taking a pile of raw materials and turning them into something that solves a specific problem for a specific person. The business grew out of that - started making things for friends, then friends of friends, and eventually it made sense to put up a proper website and make it official.

If you've got an idea for something custom, get in touch. No minimum orders, and I genuinely enjoy the weird ones.
